The Daisy Chair, developed by XUE and designed by Hans Sandgren Jakobsen, was awarded the prestigious iF DESIGN AWARD 2017 Gold in the Home Furniture category. Recognized as one of the highest distinctions in international design, the Gold Award places the Daisy Chair among the most outstanding furniture designs of the year.
The Daisy Chair explores the full potential of 3D veneer technology, opening new possibilities for shaping furniture to better align with the human body. Through advanced 3D forming, the chair’s shell is engineered to support the body precisely where it is needed, creating a sense of comfort almost like sitting within a flower. The enveloping and organic form offers both visual softness and structural strength. The Daisy Chair can be produced not only in traditional wood veneer but also in bamboo plywood.

Pushing the boundaries of what is possible with 3D veneer, the Daisy Chair integrates seat depth and armrests into a single, continuous shell. This achievement represents a significant technical challenge, as forming such depth and complexity from veneer or bamboo plywood tests the material’s physical limits. The result is a chair that demonstrates how far contemporary veneer technology can be taken when design and engineering work in close dialogue.
The Daisy Chair stood out to the iF jury for its unique ergonomic qualities, refined craftsmanship, and forward-looking use of materials. It was selected by a panel of 58 independent design experts from around the world, emerging at the top of a highly competitive field of more than 5,500 submissions from 59 countries.
Established over 60 years ago, the iF DESIGN AWARD is widely regarded as a global benchmark for design excellence. Receiving a Gold Award signifies not only aesthetic achievement, but also innovation, functionality, and relevance. With the Daisy Chair, XUE and Hans Sandgren Jakobsen have delivered a piece that exemplifies these values, marking a notable advancement in contemporary furniture design.
